“Accommodations, provided for both testing and instruction, change the way students access information and demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities; they do not change academic standards or expectations.” International Dyslexia Association. In order to be an inclusive school, it is important to explore what accommodations are available in South Africa in order for each learner to reach his/her full potential. This course will explore different accommodations and include case studies for practical application.

Karen Archer is an Educational Psychologist currently working as the Director of S.H.A.R.E. at Bellavista School. This is a unit dedicated to sharing professional knowledge, experience and collective expertise with the wider community of education and healthcare professionals working with children.
Karen has 18 years of experience in the education sector where she started off as a teacher in the senior primary phase, specializing in mathematics.
She has worked as an Educational Psychologist at Bellavista since 2013 where she has been involved in individual and group therapy of children and conducted cognitive and emotional assessments as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Karen is passionate about children and the way they learn and loves sharing this knowledge with others. This, coupled with her interest in the social-emotional aspect, has allowed her to view a child holistically and work collaboratively with other health professionals.
