Our Professional Awards Course (Award in Remedial Education) is a part-time professional development programme crafted for those who want to gain both a comprehensive understanding of, and hands-on expertise in the assessment and intervention of specific learning disorders. Over the course of 18 to 24 months, this four-module programme provides deep insights into evidence-based practices and current research, all supported by dedicated supervision to help you build practical skills.
This course can be taken face-to-face in Johannesburg, or through distance learning. There is set structure to the course. The course begins mid February 2027 with Module 1, which establishes a robust theoretical foundation. This module delves into the core concepts and research behind specific learning disorders, ensuring you have a strong understanding of the subject matter before moving on to practical application.
Module 2 shifts the focus to the collaborative and ethical aspects of the field. You’ll learn effective strategies for working with parents and other professionals, fostering a team-based approach to supporting learners. This module emphasises the importance of communication and partnership in creating successful outcomes.
Next, Module 3, is where you’ll gain hands-on experience in assessment and profiling. Under the guidance of a tutor/ mentor, you will practice assessing a learner’s individual needs and strengths to design a tailored intervention plan. You’ll have the flexibility to focus on either literacy or mathematics difficulties, or both, with the goal of setting specific intervention goals.
Finally, Module 4 synthesises everything you’ve learned. With continued tutor/ mentor support, this module is dedicated to implementing evidence-based intervention strategies. You will complete 15 to 20 hours of practical intervention in either literacy, mathematics, or a combination of both, applying your knowledge in a real-world setting to empower learners with the support they need
