Parenting an anxious child can be daunting for most parents. Anxiety has genetic roots however how we parent an anxious child can drastically impact a child’s anxiety. If we are effective in how we deal with our child’s anxiety we can really help a child to manage their own anxiety, which can have a lasting impact on how they manage their emotions going forward in life. The series will focus on proven, scientific CBT skills and ideas that will help you to understand your child’s emotions, learn what an emotion is, learn how to talk to your child about their emotions and gain techniques that you can teach your child to use themselves to manage their emotions. Parents will learn how not to accommodate the anxious child through setting effective boundaries, building resilience and self-esteem.
About Shai:
Shai Friedland is a clinical psychologist working from a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) perspective. He graduated (cum laude) from the University of South Africa (UNISA) and completed both his internship and community service at Sterkfontein Hospital. He now works full-time in private practice alongside other CBT therapists. Shai utilizes CBT in both an individual and group context with children, teenagers and adults. His areas of special interest include Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Anxiety Disorders (which include Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Phobias, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)), Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling Disorder), Excoriation (Skin-Picking) Disorder, Tics/Tourettes Disorder, Weight Loss Management, Hoarding Disorder and Sport Psychology. He also works closely with parents giving them the skills to manage their child’s heightened emotions.
