Mood Disorders

During this talk, Danella will elaborate on definitions and diagnosis of mood disorders. She will further discuss diagnostic criteria and the concept of a brain disorder vs a normal emotional reaction to adversity. Later in the talk, she explores the importance of  excluding other medical conditions when making a diagnosis, as well as the dangers of “labels”. Regarding treatment of mood disorders: both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, as well as lifestyle changes are discussed. Lastly, she will explore controversies related to mood disorders and their diagnosis.

Speaker:

Dr Danella Eliasov obtained her medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2006. She participated in the Sports Medicine masters program at WITS while completing her internship and community service at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. She completed her diploma in Mental Health in 2009 and then her Psychiatry Fellowship with the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2014. She currently practices at Netcare Park Lane Hospital.


A passionate patient advocate, Dr Eliasov has been involved in numerous matters, publications and media releases at the forefront of mental health and cutting-edge psychiatric care in South Africa. Dr Eliasov further has an active interest in acute and longer-term changes to the brain and brain functions in the aftermath of contact-sport related head trauma and concussion. In line with this, she was also appointed Chairperson of the Medical Commission of Mixed Martial Arts in South Africa and is Chief Sport and Mental Health Medical Officer for Fight With Insight.
