Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment Standard (FIE Standard) is a cognitive enrichment programme that creates systematic and structured conditions to engage children, teenagers and adults in problem-solving and metacognition. There are three levels of training and 14 instruments covered in FIE Standard. The training provides participants with the opportunity to meditate for cognitive strategies, metacognition and flexible thinking. The programme can be used with whole classes, small groups or on an individual level. The goal is to build deep thinkers who can problem solve and grapple with all types of information and situations in academics and life.

For this iThemba Cognitive Immersion, the instruments covered in the level of FIE Standard 1 include: Organisation of Dots, Comparisons, Analytic Perception and Orientation in Space. Additionally, the foundational theories of Structural Cognitive Modifiability, the Mediated Learning Experience, Cognitive Map and the Goals of Instrumental Enrichment are covered.

Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment Basic (FIE Basic) is designed to enhance cognitive abilities primarily in younger learners, though it remains an effective tool for older individuals as well. Built on the renowned theories of cognitive modifiability and mediated learning, this version adapts the success of the standard FIE programme for a younger audience, as well as older learners with higher needs. The curriculum utilises specific tools to teach both learning processes and critical concepts. Training for facilitators is comprehensive, offered in two distinct levels.

The instruments covered in FIE Basic 1 include: Organisation of Dots, Compare and Discover the Absurd, Orientation in Space, Unit to Group, and Identifying Emotions.
