Attendees will leave this workshop with a deep understanding of how reading develops from the early childhood years to end of primary school. It includes an understanding of why learning to read is difficult, what the mind does when it reads and how children learn to read and spell, with practical teaching strategies to ensure a solid grounding for reading success.
This interactive workshop will explore typical literacy development and how the learner with literacy difficulties differs. Time will be devoted to the importance of phonological awareness and the value of developing these skills in a fun, interactive manner.
The workshop will explore a structured, cumulative and multisensory approach to phonics teaching and provide participants with activity ideas for small groups and individual intervention. The administration of a free screening tool will be demonstrated, and attendees will leave with an understanding of the importance of assessment-informed intervention.
Further, the importance of reading fluency and vocabulary for comprehension will be discussed and participants will learn how to develop these skills in a structured and engaging way.
